In Alaba, the school run by the Consolata Fathers is a reference point for 850 children: it offers quality education and a stimulating learning environment. The school is well organised and has a solid reputation, but it suffers from one major infrastructural limitation: access to drinking water.
The lack of an adequate water system does not only affect the wellbeing of students and staff, it also limits the school’s potential to grow, making it harder to take in more children. Our work aims to solve this problem, strengthening the school’s services and providing a safer, healthier environment for everyone.
The project includes
- The installation of a rainwater collection system, with gutters and pipes channelling water into a large tank.
- Safe storage, with a high-capacity tank that will guarantee water even in periods of scarcity.
- Purification and distribution, with a filtering system to make the water safe and accessible to students and staff.
- Maintenance and training, involving the local community in running the water system so that it lasts over time.
The impact of the project
- Hygiene and safety — better sanitary conditions, water for daily use and for cleaning the premises.
- More educational opportunities — with proper infrastructure the school will be able to increase the number of children it can take in.
- Sustainability — a long-term water supply, managed independently by the school and its trained staff.
